The symbol of England is a red rose.
Once upon a time two dukes lived in Britain. One of them used a red rose as the symbol of the house, the other - a white one. Dukes fought for the right to be the king of the country, the one whose symbol was the red rose won and as he became the king he declared that flower to be the symbol of the whole country.
I wonder whether any of us missed the hellishly beautiful name of that war - The War of Red and White Rose (The Wars of Roses) in which the largest part of English aristocracy died as well as other parts of populations decreased. To think of it, you can't imagine bigger grotesque - a combination of a delicate flower with a bloody massacre. But if you look into an encyclopedia or an encyclopedic dictionary or another references then everything more or less falls into place.
The Wars of Roses (1455-85) - a bloody feudal war for the English throne between two branches of the royal House of Plantagenet - the houses of Lancaster (the red rose in the heraldic badge) and York (the white rose in the heraldic badge).
The present symbol of the United Kingdom, the Red Rose, after 1485 decorated the heraldic badge of the House of Lancaster who dusputed the right of the representatives in native places of Yorks to the english throne the heraldic badge of whom had the White Rose.
