http://www.differencebetween.com/difference-between-area-and-vs-place/Если очень кратко и на пальцах - area в основном касается большого куска пространства / земли. Place - это вот это конкретное место.
" 'Place' refers to a certain point as in: You are sitting here - this is your place. 'Area' covers the space/place all around you - They live in a __country area__ where the gardens are all very big." (типа они живут в сельской местности)
'Area' is a large amount of land as in: There are some areas in the country where there are few houses/This is the public area where people can meet each other/Over there is the play area for children.

The word ‘area’ conveys the sense of ‘space’ on a surface or a region or locality. On the other hand the word ‘place’ conveys the sense of ‘spot’, a particular portion of space. This is the main difference between the two words, namely, area and place. Observe the two sentences:
1.The playground has a large area.
2.The total area of the land is 1700 square feet.
In both the sentences the word ‘area’ conveys the sense of ‘space’ and hence the meanings of the sentences would be ‘the play ground has a large space to play’ and ‘the total space of the land is about 1700 sq.ft.
Observe the two sentences:
1.It is a cool place.
2.The places of interests will be visited by me.
