"On Social Freedom" by John Stuart Mill - one of the key texts of the liberal tradition. The main points of the book are known to everyone, who has at least some interest in political and social issues. In The Social Philosophy and Ethics, Mill considers freedom in the broader context. He associates freedom with the principle of utility. Individual freedom in society should not be limited because it contributes to the achievement of happiness and prosperity for all people. In this case the individual happiness depends on the happiness of others members of the community. Everyone can realize their abilities without denying such a possibility for other people. This is supposed to be facilitated by just laws. Mill does not get tired to stress the importance for the person and society as a whole “full freedom to human nature to expand itself in innumerable and conflicting directions”. Freedom not only protects against the tyranny of the political rulers, it insures against the tyranny of the prevailing opinion and feelings, against general social trends, ideas and habits. Freedom is limited only by the freedom of others.
