My Future Speciality

(The Engineering Profession)

Engineering is one of the most ancient occupations in history. Engineering is often defined as making practical application of theoretical sciences such as physics, mathematics and the like for manufacturing purposes.

Nowadays the branches of engineering may be classified as follows: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, civil engineering, structural engineering, chemical engineering, etc.

A person engaged in a particular filed of engineering is called an engineer.

Technological and industrial progress in any country depends mostly upon an engineer. He is considered to be a well-trained specialist with an analytical frame of mind. An engineer is responsible for designing and making machines, equipment and other things. Such work requires creative ability and a working knowledge of scientific principles.

The engineer must also have an understanding of various processes and materials available to him. He can be employed in any of the following areas: the organization of manufacture, research and development, design, construction, logistics and industrial training. A mechanical engineer is involved in building and servicing steam engines, internal combustion engines, turbines (steam, gas, water), pumps, compressors, machine-tools, various mechanisms and vehicles.

An electrical engineer may deal with power: generators, motors, transformers or electronics (radio, radar, television).

A civil engineer is busy with housing, building dams, roads, tunnels and soon.

An industrial engineer looks after designing and developing tools, dies, jigs, assembly fixtures used in manufacture. He is a key person in a production process.

The education and training of engineers is very important. In order to keep up with changes and be successful in his career he must be prepared to upgrade his engineering knowledge by continuing education (courses, workshops, conferences).
