Hi! Today we discuss shops in the UK and USA. Supermarkets like Tesco and Walmart sell food and household goods. Shopping centres or malls have many shops and leisure places. Department stores offer various departments but not usually food.
Smaller shops include the butcher's, grocer's, baker's, and fishmonger's for specific items. A newsagent sells newspapers and sweets. In the UK, apostrophe S is common, unlike in the USA, where terms like "butchery" or "grocery" are used. A British chemist is a US drug store.

вот текст:Hi! Today we are talking about shopping and different kinds of shops in the UK and the USA. Nowadays shopping may be very different. You can find any goods you like in brick-and-mortar and online shops. This video is only about British and American brick-and-mortar shops. London is a great place to go shopping and it has several famous shopping areas and streets like Oxford Street, Regent Street, Bond Street and Mayfair. You can easily spend the whole day in London's shops, shopping centres, department stores and supermarkets. Let's look at different kinds or types of shops and differences in British and American English. A supermarket is a large shop where you can buy food, drinks and household goods. For example, in the UK such shops are Tesco. In the USA the most famous brand is Walmart. In fact, they are chain shops, which means that all shops have the same brand name, the same design and pretty much the same selection of goods. A shopping center or a mall is a huge complex with lots of shops and leisure places like cafes, restaurants and often a cinema. You can buy there almost everything. A department store is a large shop where people can also buy almost everything, but not usually food. Unlike malls, they don't have separate shops inside. There are departments, men's clothing department, women's clothing department, furniture department and others. Anyway, the choice of goods is practically the same. Clothes, electronics, furniture, household goods and equipment. There are also smaller shops. A butcher's shop is a place where people go to buy meat. They often say go to the butchers without the word shop. A grocer's shop or a grocery shop is a place where you can buy food and household items. But unlike a supermarket, this shop is not large. You can also say go to the grocers. A grocery shop is a place where you can buy food and household items. Apostrophe S is very often used when talking about small shops in the UK. More examples. You can buy bread and bakery, biscuits, cakes, croissants, etc. at the baker's. You can buy fish at the fishmonger's or a fish shop. People go to the florist to buy flowers. A newsagent is a place where you can buy newspapers, magazines and confectionery. There are also places which are not shops but have apostrophe S. For example, at dentists, at doctors, at opticians, at travel agents. For instance, a butchery shop, and they go to the butcher. A grocery, or a grocery shop. They say a bakery and they go to the bakery. Some names of American shops are completely different from British ones. Oh, by the way, in the USA, they say a store. A shop in the USA is really a very small store. A British chemist is an American drug store. But the word pharmacy is used in both countries. More examples. Let's go back to London. There are places that you must visit if you want to go shopping. Oxford Street has more than 300 shops, outlets and department stores. Here you . Regent Street offers a good range of mid-priced fashion stores, including Hamleys, Liberty and the Apple Store. If you're looking for designer clothes and luxury shopping, go to Bond Street and Mayfair. This is probably London's most exclusive shopping area, home to big names including Burberry, Louis Vuitton and Tiffany & Co.
