Día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is not a Mexican version of Halloween. The two annual events differ greatly in traditions and spirit. Halloween is a dark night of terror and mischief, while Day of the Dead festivities last over two days in a colourful and life-affirming joy. Sure, the theme is death, but the point is to demonstrate love and respect for dead family members. In towns and cities throughout Mexico, celebrators wear funky makeup and costumes, hold parades and parties, sing and dance, and make offerings to lost loved ones. The rituals are full of symbolic meaning. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honour their departed family members. These altars are decorated with bright yellow marigold flowers, photos of the departed, and their favourite food and drinks. The offerings are believed to encourage visits from the land of the dead as the departed souls hear their prayers, smell their foods and join in the celebrations. “Our dead are never dead to us, until we have forgotten them,” say the Mexicans. Those who celebrate Day of the Dead see death as a welcomed part of life. That is why you can see brightly coloured, often smiling and dancing, skeletons and skulls everywhere during the holiday. This view of death began way back during the one month Aztec festival where they celebrated the dead and paid homage to the lady of death, Mictlancíhuatl, who protected their departed loved ones and helped them in the afterlife. Thanks to efforts by UNESCO, the term “cultural heritage” is not limited to monuments and collections of objects. It also includes living expressions of culture — traditions — passed down from generation to generation. In 2008, UNESCO recognised the importance of Día de los Muertos by adding the holiday to its list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
