1 Alaska is called the Last Frontier, because there the Northernmost point in the USA is situated - Point Barrow. There are no roads in much of Alaska - 1 in 68 people are pilots. The aurora borealis is the northern-light display that brightens the 24-hour nights. In the summer, Alaska is the land of the midnight sun.

2 Arizona's called the Grand Canyon State, because there the Grand Canyon is situated, a scenic 277-mile-long gorge, one mile deep in some places. Hoover Dam regulates the flow of the Colorado River. Its huge generators use the energy of the moving water to make electricity.

3 California is called the Golden State, because it's one of the most southern states of the USA, where the great California Gold Rush began in 1848 when James Marshall accidently found gold at Sutter's Mill.

4 Florida's nickname is the Sunshine State. Key West is the southernmost city in the continental U.S. Florida means land of flowers in Spanish - and was named by the explorer Ponce de Leon in honor of the Spanish Easter Festival of Flowers.

5 Although Georgia has been called the Peach State, more peanuts are grown there than in any other state. Georgia's nickname is Empire State of the South.
