Sonic mania z button

Problem with mods (Z button)
I had a queastion regarding some sonic mania plus mods (sonic modernboost). For a lot of actions, you are required to press the Z button. However, it never seems to work for me. I'm using a keyboard, not a controller. It does work when I use my controller. Does anyone know how to fix this?
