UK I liked myjob so when I was let go, I was very upset. Then I realised that it was probably one of the best things that could have ever happened to me.
Amonth orso before I found myself out ofa job, a friend of mine was telling me about a volunteer project which was concerned with elephant conservation in Kenya. According to Peter, they needed someone with a background in advertising who could promote awareness of a large elephant sanctuary in Africa, It would be my job to attract visitors, and their money, to the sanctuary, I had the right qualifications and so a very short time
later, I found myself living and volunteering my skills in Africa. Forthose ofyouwho don't know, it isaverysad factthat African elephants have reduced in number by almost half since the 1980s. And, as you know, they are huge creatures and they need very large areas of land in which to roam and find food to feed themselves and their young. What this means is that elephants often come into contact with humans who view elephants as a threat to their lives and livelihoods.
targets. First, to offer the elephants a place away from ilegal hunting, and second, to try and change the negative atlitude held by the locals towards elephants. in what came as a pleasant surprise to myself, and the sanctuary's organisers, over 200 families volunteered to turn over their land so that elephants could live there. What this pleasant turn of events meant was that many
elephants could survive, It also meant that the locals could now eam a living, not by killing the elephants for their ivory, but by managing the sanctuary and earning money from the tourism that the sanctuary attracted.
Over a year has passed since I came to Kenya and the sanctuary and the elephants are flourishing, For my part, all can say is that it makes me very proud that the volunteer work done by myself and hundreds of others has resulted in a place where the greatest beast on earth has found a place where it can live and roam safely and freely.

The author used to work for an advertising firm in The Mwaluganje Elephant Sanctuary in Kenya. When they were let go from their job, they felt upset at first but later realized that it was a good thing. A friend told them about a volunteer project for elephant conservation, and the author was hired to promote awareness of the sanctuary and attract visitors. African elephants are in danger due to hunting and human encroachment, so the author's job was to create a safe place for them and change local attitudes towards them. Over 200 families donated their land to the sanctuary, allowing the elephants to live and the locals to earn money from tourism. The sanctuary is now thriving, and the author is proud to have contributed to the protection of these magnificent animals.
