Della had been saving hard to buy a Christmas present for her husband, Jim, but it was Christmas Eve and the few cents she’d managed to scrape together weren’t going to go very far. She so wanted to get him something special, something that he would treasure.

As she stood in front of the mirror, her beautiful, long auburn hair hanging over her shoulders, she had an idea. She flung on her coat and her hat and marched out onto the street. She stopped in front of a door which bore a sign saying ‘Hair Goods of All Kinds’. She summoned up her courage, pushed the door open and walked in.

‘Will you buy my hair?’ asked Della.

‘Let’s have a look at it first,’ said an old lady, turning to face Della.

Della took her hat off and let her thick, curly locks fall down her back.

‘Twenty dollars. Will that do you?’, asked the old lady. Della nodded dumbly, fighting back the tears as the first lock fell to the floor. But once she had the money in her hand, the smile returned to her face and she skipped out of the shop to find a present for her beloved Jim.

She knew exactly what she was looking for. The one possession that Jim prized above all others was a gold watch that had been his father’s and his grandfather’s before him. The present that Della wanted to buy for him was a simple gold chain to hold this precious watch for much as he loved it, he was still a little ashamed of using it in public because of the old leather strap he was forced to use in place of a chain. She handed over the twenty dollars, wrapped the chain up safely in a piece of coloured tissue paper and set off for home.

On her way she stopped to look in the window of her favourite shop. It sold antique knick-knacks; earrings, rings and, there at the front of the window lay her favourites, a set of beautiful tortoiseshell hair combs. She and Jim had stopped here the other day to admire them. He’d run his fingers through her hair and told her that the combs would have looked beautiful against the dark red of her hair. He loved her hair almost as much as his watch. Della caught a glimpse of her reflection in the window and put her hand up to her newly-cut locks. What would Jim say? She was sure he’d forgive her once he saw his present. And anyway, she thought her hair looked quite good in its new, boyish style.

That evening as she waited for Jim to come home she felt excited, and a little apprehensive. When she heard his footsteps on the stairs, she ran to the door. The look on his face when he saw her was a hundred times worse than anything she could have expected. His face crumpled and he reached out his hand, saying ‘Your hair’.

She ran towards him, crying and apologising, ‘Jim, I’m sorry, I’m sorry, but surely you still love me, don’t you? I sold it. I sold it to buy you a present. Look!’ and she thrust the tiny tissue paper parcel in his hand. He, at the same time, reached into his pocket and held out a small parcel of about the same size. ‘My darling, of course I love you, with or without your hair, it’s just that I bought these for you ...’

They both took the small, simply wrapped presents from each other’s trembling hands. Della bent over hers, hardly wanting to open it. There in her hand lay the tortoiseshell combs. ‘Oh, my love,’ she whispered, ‘They’re beautiful, so beautiful, but don’t worry, my hair’ll grow. This time next year I’ll be wearing them, you’ll see. Go on open your present ...’

His hands fumbled on the paper as he pulled out the gold chain, and his mouth shaped itself into a sad smile.

‘Don’t you like it?’ she asked anxiously.

‘It’s perfect,’ he said. ‘But it’s just that ...I sold my watch this evening ...to buy the combs!’

The two looked at each other for a moment, not knowing whether to laugh or cry. Jim drew Della towards him, kissed her
