Thomas Alva Edison was an
American inventor and businessman.
His most famous inventions were
the phonograph, the motion picture
camera, the long-lasting practical
electric light bulb. Edison patented
1,093 inventions in the USA, and at
least several hundred ones in the
United Kingdom, France, Germany
and other countries.
Thomas Edison was born in 1847, in Milan, Ohio. He was the youngest of
seven children in the family. Edison went to school only a few months and his
teachers thought he was very slow. Afterward his mother, the former teacher,
taught him at home. He never attended any technical school, college or
university.
Edison was partially deaf due to scarlet fever in his childhood. And why
didn't Edison invent a hearing aid? He often told reporters that he was working
on one; but Thomas Edison believed his deafness made him a more successful
scientist because it helped him concentrate on his work.
At the age of twenty-four Edison married 16-year-old Mary Stilwell. She
was an employee at one of his shops. They had two sons and a daughter. After
his wife’s death Edison remarried 20-year-old Mina Miller. They also had three
children together.
Edison died of complications of diabetes on October 18, 1931. Several
places have been named after Edison - the town of Edison in New
Jersey, Thomas Edison State University, Lake Thomas A Edison in California,
the Edison Bridge in New Jersey, the Edison Bridge in Florida, and the Edison
Bridge in Ohio.
