Reading Comprehension
THE LAST LEAF
(After O’Henry)

Sue and Johnsy lived in a big house in New York. They were young girls. They were painters. The girls were good friends and lived and worked together in a small room. Sometimes they had very little work and had no money to buy food. But they were young and liked their work. And when people like their work, they are happy. The girls were happy too.
It was autumn. It was very cold in the street. It rained every day. One day Johnsy fell ill. She was very ill. She was ill for a week. The doctor said to Sue:
“Your friend is very ill. I cannot help her, if she doesn’t want to live. And she says she wants to die. When people do not want to live, no doctor can help them.”
The doctor went away, and Sue saw that Johnsy was looking out of the window and counting. She looked out of the window and saw a stone wall. There was an old ivy vine (плеть/стебель плюща) on the stone wall. There were only some leaves left on it.
“I am counting the leaves,” said Johnsy. “I know that when the last leaf falls down, I shall die.”
“Oh, Johnsy, please, please, do not say so!” cried Sue.
In the evening there was only one leaf on the vine.
“You see, Sue, there is only one leaf now. It will soon fall down, and I shall die,” said Johnsy.
Sue did not answer. She could not answer. She was crying. She went out of the room and was crying there, when she saw old Behrman. He was a painter too and lived in the same house. He was not a good painter, but he hoped to paint a beautiful picture some day.
“Why are you crying, girl?” asked he when he saw Sue.
The girl told him about Johnsy.
Morning came. Johnsy looked out of the window. The last leaf was still there. The day passed. It did not fall down. Next morning came. The last leaf was still there.
“Oh, Sue, this last leaf still lives, and I shall live too. I shall not die!”
In some days the doctor said that the girl was well again. When he was leaving, he said:
“Behrman died last night. Two days ago a man found him near the wall. He was all wet and cold. He was very weak and could not stand.”
Sue came up to the window and looked at the last leaf. It was not a leaf. It was a picture. A beautiful picture. Sue said:
“This picture has saved Johnsy, but our old friend died. This was his best picture.”
