Как правильней: "I have always known this" или "I always knew this"?

Вопрос-то нетривиальный. По этому поводу носители определиться не могут, вот, например:
My grammar book says "I always knew I could trust you." means the same
as "I've always known I could trust you." I'm doubtful about this.
I think the first sentense means "I knew I could trust you before, but
now I don't trust you anymore.", and the second one means "I always
trust you no matter what time it is." Am I right? What do you think?

- This is one of those things one either does or doesn't get. In this case
the getting or not-getting depends on a distinction present in some
dialects and absent from others, not on any personal virtue or failing.
In my dialect the present perfect and past simple refer to the same
state of affairs, but to different ways of thinking about it.
