I can remember all the first books I have. Moreover I can remember the content of any book. I still have them in my home library.
My favorite book is “The Golden Book of Fairy Tales” by Shalaeva G.P..
I like it very much! I use up this book only! In my childhood I can’t go to bed without fairy tale from this book! “The Golden Book of Fairy Tales” was my joy and my mother's punishment.
Usually my mum read bedtime stories for me. Sometimes my dad told invented tale, where the fairy-tale characters intertwined with us. And, of course, my grandma read bedtime stories for me and it was great! I used to like them a lot and i also used to insist them to narrate more and more stories that is the reason i loved ‘Bedtime Stories’ - the movie, it made me remember my childhood days.
It is a very interesting question. Certainly, i do not remember, my mother help me to remember and she surprised me very much, it turns out, I started reading at 5 and begun to solve puzzles. Such eagerness to me now! What sorts of books did i prefer? Unfortunately, I do not remember too. My mum help me again and surprised me again and again! My first and favorite book was ABC-book by Ukraine edition. Then I read ‘Bible for kids’, “The Golden Book of Fairy Tales”, and others.
Shame on me! Perhaps I should be ashamed, because I read English and American children's books rarely. I remember two children’s books very well.
But I read a lot of foreign books in Russian. Such as «The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer» and «The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn» by Mark Twain; «The Jungle Book» by Joseph Rudyard Kipling; « The Wizard of Oz» by Lyman Frank Baum; «Winnie-the-Pooh» by Alan Alexander Milne; «Harry Potter» by Joanne Katheline Rowling; and others. But I have not got favourites, because my favorite books are Russian books.
I do not think that fanciful stories are an escape from the harsh realities of life. Fairy tales - this is a reality, translated into the language of children. They tell the child about how to solve problems which have any person. Their charm is that they do not say directly "you should ", as is often the adults do. Fairy tales help the child to take the place of strong character, and resourceful character, do the impossible and help someone. In reality, then the child will be use that experience. And I do not think that they should be encouraged to read more serious stuffs as "sound preparation for life". Child will receive the same lesson, but the fairy tale is more interesting and more fun.
Usually, I think, the reader chooses a book which the media recommends and promotes. It may be advice of friends, parents and other people who have read this book before. Also it may be “omnivorous” reader who read everything. As for me, the choice of book to read is very easy. I have got a big home library with lots of unread books, I choose one - and read. It does not matter what the book has a physical characteristics. The most important thing is always in the contents of the book.
I think that television is gradually replacing reading. It is not very good! Many parents do not have enough time to read bedtime stories for children, and they find only one way to put the child in front of the TV. It is terrible! Even if you are very busy you should show your ability to spend time for your child. It is very important for child – the baby thinks that you love him, you care about him and you need him. Besides, when the child reads a tale he uses an imaginative, which goes to sleep while baby watches the cartoon (f.ex.).But it is possible for television watching not only to discourage but actually to inspire reading.///////////////////////////
It is possible to discern among the young an insensitivity to nuances of language and an inability to perceive more than just a story. It is when «the lights are on but nobody's home» or «the eyes are open but lifeless, not all there» =) I think it's a great loss. Just young people do not like to read.
