Василий Леонтьев вырос в Петрограде в семье профессора экономики Василия Леонтьева и его жены Златы Беккер. Его воспитанием занималась сама мама Василия. В 1931 году Василий Леонтьев переехал в Америку и стал членом Национального бюро экономических исследований. Впоследствии сдал экзамен и стал лектором в Гарвардском и Нью-Йоркском университетах. Основал Американский институт экономического анализа.
Под его руководством была построена матрица «затраты-выпуск» для экономики Германии. Матрица послужила основой для выбора целей ВВС. За это он получил Нобелевскую премию.
